World Wide Scholarships and Study Abroad Information

Financing a post-secondary education is no easy task, as you may have already discovered. There are a number of resources to assist you. You may take advantage of university-based opportunities.

More than two-thirds of non-U.S. students use funds from their own personal accounts and from their families as the primary source of financing their education. Only about 20 percent of non-U.S. students receive most of their academic funding from a U.S. college or university.

A few U.S. colleges, universities and English language programs offer primarily partial scholarships for non-U.S. students. The criteria and policies at each individual institution vary.

FINANCIAL AID In USA

It is important to understand that most universities offer financial assistance to international students based primarily on merit and rarely on need. The amount, and type of assistance offered varies, based on the university, department and level of study. Assistance of funds is more likely in Graduate studies and less in Undergraduate courses. Also funds are more likely to be available in fields like Engineering, Physical Sciences and Biological sciences, rather than in courses like Humanities, Social Sciences and Management.

In contrast to undergraduate education, where admission and financial awards are controlled at the institutional level, US graduate education is quite tightly controlled at the departmental level. Funding for certain fields tends to be more heavily subsidised than for others. For example, a student of physics, chemistry, or biology may find institutional funding more readily available than a student of humanities, the social sciences, or education.

Scholarships and Awards

There are also independent foundations and scholarship organisations that provide funding for British students studying in the US. Many of these awards will also pay for living and travel expenses. For example, The US-UK Fulbright Commission grants between six and ten graduate awards in any discipline at the US institution of the UK student's choice. The award covers tuition fees, health insurance, and living expenses for the first year of study only.
Funding directories, such as Peterson's Grants for Graduate and Postdoctoral Study (1998) and the annually published The Grants Register (Palgrave Macmillan), show that there are hundreds of independent awards available, so doing as much research as possible is a key factor in getting funding.

Personal Loans

Many personal loan schemes are also available from both US and UK sources such as banks and loan services. Loan amounts and repayment options vary depending on the field, level, and length of study. Several banks in Britain offer loans for study to existing customers, though most banks do not have a special student loan scheme for those wishing to study in the US. A second option for any student with residence in the EU is a Career Development Loan. These loans are for students who are following a professional course, and intend on working in the EU upon completion.
The availability of US-based loans for non-US citizens is limited. In almost all cases, US-based loan programs require non-US citizens to have a creditworthy US citizen or permanent resident to act as a co-borrower. However, a few universities have arrangements with lenders that do not require a co-signer so students should investigate.

Paid Employment

Additionally, international students may work for up to 20 hours per week on campus when classes are in session, and full-time during university holidays. International students are also eligible for up to one calendar year of Optional Practical Training (OPT), provided that the position is directly related to the students' field of study and commensurate with their educational level. OPT may be applied for after nine months of full-time study and it allows a student the opportunity to gain professional experience with an American firm while earning. At the same time, it puts an attractive capstone to the graduate experience.

Undergraduate Aid

You must submit a financial aid application if you intend to seek financial assistance for your studies abroad. The policies regarding financial aid vary considerably. The profile of a college usually indicates the type of financial aid it offers. For aid, Undergraduate students have to submit the institution’s own financial aid forms, as well as the Foreign Student’s Financial Aid Form, which is provided by the college and administered by the College Scholarship Service of the College Board. A bank statement will also often be required. Some details, usually asked in these forms are :

Your total personal annual income
Total annual income of your Parents
Your average annual living expenses
Some details of your and your parents' assets
Sources of funding for your education other than from the University

Note : Even if no assistantship is available at the time of admission, most students manage to get some kind of financial aid from the university after one or two semesters. So it makes sense to go to the US for education if you can manage one year’s expenses on your own.

Postgraduate Aid

Postgraduate students have to indicate their requirement for financial aid at the time of filling in the application form. The different types of financial help available:

Types of Assistance
Merit based assistance is awarded in many forms, from tuition waivers, various types of assistantships, to fellowships. The most common are listed here :

Tuition Waiver : This means that the student does not have to pay the tuition fees at the university. However, general fees (for the use of university facilities like the library, computers, and sports and health services) usually have to be borne by the student. A tuition waiver is frequently awarded in conjunction with a scholarship or teaching/research assistantship.
Scholarship / Fellowship : This is usually an outright grant based on the student’s academic ability and performance. Hence, Only a truly outstanding student may be considered for this type of award, before enrolling at the university. A full scholarship would pay for a student’s entire living expenses at that university, whereas a partial scholarship would require additional funds from the student.
Assistantship : Most students who receive assistance usually do so in the form of an assistantship, i.e. a cash stipend sufficient for their living expenses, and/or tuition waiver. To get this, they have to work for a maximum of 20 hours per week. This work normally consists of teaching and research activities. These are usually for graduate courses. Teaching assistantships are more likely to be in universities, which have large undergraduate classes whereas research assistantships tend to be more common in those fields and universities in which considerable research is in progress. Information brochures of most universities give this information. Often, teaching and research abilities must be proved before assistantship is granted. Hence, many universities grant this only after the first semester. You may also be required to take TSE (Test of Spoken English) to qualify for a teaching assistantship.

Who Should Apply? Students have a greater chance of getting financial aid if they :

show evidence of a high level of academic achievement
achieve high Standardized Examination scores (GRE, GMAT, TOEFL etc.)
demonstrate financial need but have private funding to cover some of the cost. Financial need is not crucial for some awards.
enroll in a field or have teaching experience in a subject offered at the undergraduate level (to increase opportunities for a teaching assistantship)
specialize in a field or have a research interest which parallels that of the department and faculty or private funding source (which increases opportunities for research assistantships and grants)
have outstanding letter(s) of recommendation and an impressive statement of purpose.
send a sample of professional writing, published or otherwise.

Note : Even if no assistantship is available at the time of admission, Most Indian students manage to get some kind of financial aid from the university after one or two semesters. So it makes sense to go to the US for education if you can manage to cover one year’s expenses on your own.

Loans from U.S. Banks

These are the best alternative for students applying to the MBA program. One thing to keep in mind when applying for loans is that, in most cases, you need to have a co-signer who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The co-signer is responsible for paying back the loan if you should default on it. There are some banks that waive the co-signer requirement for specific schools. You should check this information from the school website. As an example, Citibank provides loans to international students admitted to Harvard Business School without a co-signer. Another example is Bank of America providing loans without a co-signer to students at Kenan-Flagler, University of North Carolina (at the time of writing this, the CEO of Bank of America is an alumnus of Kenan-Flagler School of Management).
The terms of the loans usually require any interest or principal payments after graduation. Read the terms of any and all loans before you sign. Make sure you understand those terms and what your repayment schedule and fees entail. Ask for assistance in interpreting the fine print if you are having trouble understanding it.
We have seen that a lot of students are very debt-averse. If you have been accepted to a good program, your chances of getting a good job are very good and paying off the loan is not that big an ordeal as it seems. So, if you do get admitted to a school of your choice, we would recommend that you explore this funding alternative.

Other Sources of Funding

There are many other sources of funding especially for graduate students applying to the universities in US. These need some spadework. If you try hard, you may find the kind of funding that suits your needs. A few good websites that offer information for international students are :

Financial Aid for International Students (www.finaid.org)
NAFSA Association of International Educators (http://www.nafsa.org)

www.admissionglobal.com is dedicated to the free help the students
seeking opportunities for highr education and jobs.

How to Situate When Applying for a Job

If you want to be in the top 20% of job applicants who get noticed and win interviews, you should be thinking about how to incorporate sales secrets into your job search strategy.

Whether you are applying for a position on the front line in a manufacturing capability or as the chief operating officer in the front office, He advises taking the following steps to set yourself apart:

Know about the company and the industry. Nearly everyone who applies will know something about the company. Go a step further and find out the details about the company and about the industry. Ask yourself what challenges the company is facing, and, more importantly, how will the role you are applying for affect those challenges or provide value?

You might be asking, "Why does it matter?" For example, if you know the company is in warehousing, and they have a reputation for having the best and most sophisticated distribution systems, think about the things that are probably important to them. Perhaps it is speed, reliability, and accuracy? throughout the interview, because you know a little bit more than the next guy, you could talk about your proven ability to get the job done and done right, or talk about your reliability or the different types of distribution systems you've used and how it will be easy for you to learn theirs.

Take a quick look inside. Just like companies make sure their potential customers out to make sure they are financially stable and not "hard cases with an approach," so should you. If they are a public company, read about their finances and see how their stock is doing. If there are any postings from current or former employees. Do they talk about the company being a hard place to work or a mutual environment where employees are valued? Do people feel like "cogs in the wheel," or do they feel like their contributions matter? Check out Twitter and Facebook, and see if they have a presence. What's being said? What's not being said? Are there articles about the company and their community involvement? Articles about less than positive activities? Better to know, so you can say no.

Find out who is who in the zoo. Go to their company website to learn about the top people. Follow up by visiting Linked In to investigate them and anyone else at the company. For most professionals, Linked In has become standard for posting a professional profile. You may be able to find valuable common connections or common professional or social interests of the people who will be interviewing or working with you. You may learn where they went to school and what books they are reading. You can also find and check industry or professional groups that they belong to, and see if there is any useful or interesting information available for you there.
Do your due assiduousness to stand out in a crowd, because it is a very big crowd. You will likely be rewarded with interview opportunities.

Bangladesh ranks higher in world's success index

Bangladesh has improved its status by one notch to 95th among 110 nations in a worldwide assessment of wealth and quality of life.

The country was ranked 96th in the last year's Legatum Prosperity Index that provides the only global assessment of national prosperity based on both wealth and well-being.

It assesses 110 countries, which represent over 93 percent of the world's population and 97 percent of the world's GDP, and ranks them on the basis of their performance in eight sub-indices, including economy, governance, personal freedom, and social capital.

The Legatum Institute is an independent non-partisan public policy group based in London.

This year neighbouring India slipped down three notches to 91st from 88th last year while it is the world's one of the fastest growing economies. Sri Lanka has ranked 63rd and Nepal 93rd.

Bangladesh has fared better than Pakistan, ranking 107th, as the index re-crowned Norway in the first place and Denmark in the second. Australia grabbed the third place.

Last two year's bottom-placed Zimbabwe moved one step up, leaving Central African Republic languishing at 110th in this year's ranking.

Bangladesh's economy was ranked 73rd in the index and the institute said despite robust growth in Bangladesh's economy, there remain many obstacles to sustained growth.

The country has come out 92nd in entrepreneurship and opportunity. It said low levels of innovation in Bangladesh are the result of high start-up costs and poor ICT infrastructure.

On governance it ranked Bangladesh at 89th, saying the country's government is repressive and unstable, but highly popular with citizens.

Tears of a mother

Nasim Akhtar sheds tears of sorrow after hearing of the prison sentence handed down to her son, the disgraced Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Aamer.

Relatives wept and professed the innocence of their loved ones on Thursday as a London court jailed three Pakistani cricketers for fixing parts of a Test match against England.

"My son is innocent and he did the no ball at the asking of the captain," said Nasim Akhtar, the mother of Mohammad Aamer, tears rolling down her cheeks at her home in the village of Changa Bangial outside the Pakistani capital.

Aamer, 19, is the youngest of the trio and was jailed for six months.

Aamer's mother, who lives in a simple two-roomed home, 73 kilometres (46 miles) east of Islamabad, said she feared she might die before he returns home.

"I spoke to him two days ago and he asked me to pray for his acquittal... I'm ill after this case, suffering from several diseases and I may not be here (when he gets out)," she added.

"My prayers are with my son and only Allah will do justice with us," she said, watching the television in her living room, surrounded by female relatives.

Aamer's house is located on a narrow street. The village of Changa Bangial is surrounded by farmland, where workers were tilling the land with tractors.

"He should not have been sentenced after his confession. We were under the impression that he will be released after the imposition of a fine," said Aamer's brother, 26-year-old Mohammad Ijaz.

In the eastern city of Lahore, where Butt was brought up in relative luxury compared to Aamer, his sisters spoke to reporters to defend their brother and claimed he had been made a scapegoat for a wider conspiracy.

"The punishment is unfair, it is shocking. Our brother is innocent," said Khadija, veiled and in her 30s, outside the family home.

"We talked to him this morning he was very upset and asked us to pray for him... His crime is that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time," she added.

"The trio had been framed and made part of a wider controversy."

Sri Lanka defends nationalization proffer

Sri Lanka yesterday defended a controversial move to nationalize "under-performing" private companies and rejected allegations that the move was politically motivated.

Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said the proposed legislation was aimed at improving productivity in companies that received tax and other concessions but were plagued with mismanagement and inefficiency.

President Mahinda Rajapakse's government is set to introduce the "Revival of Under-performing Enterprises and Under-utilised Assets Act" next week in parliament where his party commands a two-thirds majority.

Rambukwella denied charges that the bill was intended at taking over the businesses of those who finance the country's resistance.

"We are not targeting any folks, but what we hope to realize is a people-friendly board that will fully utilize the assets," Rambukwella told reporters in Colombo.

He discarded conflict claims that the planned nationalization would be a blow to the country's projection of attracting much-needed foreign investments.

Companies that either bought or leased property from the state in the past 20 years or received any tax break during that period qualify to be taken over, according to a draft bill.

The government has listed assets of 37 private companies to be taken, including some owned by key opposition backers.

One private company listed to be taken over is building a 250-room hotel in Colombo to be managed by the US hotel chain Hyatt.

There was no immediate comment from any of the firms.

Teri Meri Lyrics

Aa…..
Aa….

Teri meri, meri teri
Prem kahani hai mushkil
Do lafzoon mein yeh
Bayaan na ho paye
Ik ladka ik ladki ki
Hai yeh kahani nayi
Do lafzoon mein yeh
Bayaan na ho paye

Teri meri, meri teri
Prem kahani hai mushkil
Do lafzoon mein yeh
Bayaan na ho paye
Ik dooje se huye judaa
Jab ik dooje ke liye bane

Teri meri, meri teri
Prem kahani hai mushkil
Do lafzoon mein yeh
Bayaan na ho paye

Aaa….
Aaa….

Tum se dil jo lagaya
Toh jahan maine paya
Kabhi socha na tha yeh
Milon door hoga saaya
Kyun khuda tune
Mujhe aisa khaab dikhaya
Jab haqiqat mein usse
Todhna tha..

Aa…

Ik dooje se huye judaa
Jab ik dooje ke liye bane
Teri meri, meri teri
Prem kahani hai mushkil
Do lafzoon mein yeh
Bayaan na ho paye

Teri meri, meri teri
Baaton ka har lamha
Sabje anjaana
Do lafzoon mein yeh
Bayaan na ho paye

Har ehsaas mein tu hai
Har ik yaad mein tera afsaana
Do lafzoon mein yeh
Bayaan na ho paye

Aa….

Saara din bit jaye
Saari raat jagaye
Bus khayal tumhara
Lamha Lamha tadpaye
Yeh tadap keh rahi hai
Mit jaye faasle yeh
Tere mere darmiyaan
Joh hai saare..

Ik dooje se huye judaa
Jab ik dooje ke liye bane
Teri meri, meri teri
Baaton ka har lamha
Sabje anjaana
Do lafzoon mein yeh
Bayaan na ho paye

Har ehsaas mein tu hai
Har ik yaad mein tera afsaana
Do lafzoon mein yeh
Bayaan na ho paye

Teri meri, meri teri
Prem kahani hai mushkil
Do lafzoon mein yeh
Bayaan na ho paye

Hidden Hero Of Canada

As the former frontman of beloved Canadian indie rockers the Rheostatics & acclaimed author of a series of non fiction books, Dave Bidini is something close to a connoisseur is icon of Canuck culture. Fitting, then, that he takes on one of Can Rock is most intriguing stars in his new Writing Gordon Lightfoot. Using Toronto's 1972 Mariposa folk festival-which Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, & Lightfoot all attended as a jumping off point, Bidini explores his enigmatic subject's music & cultural influence.

Look, I know that for most music fans, Lightfoot is maybe best-known-if he's known at all as one of these 70s sensitive singer-songwriter types who shows up on cheap compilations. But for Canadians-as Bidini deftly argues-he's something more, closer to a foundational figure. I called Bidini at his home in Toronto to discuss.

For non-Canadians, Lightfoot is generally remembered, I think, as neither a star nor a cult hero. Would about him appealed to you as a subject? His life has not been overwritten, I suppose. There was one book about him maybe 25 years ago but that's it. He's elusive. He very rarely goes on the record to talk about his life. & subjects that you have to really work to get your head around are often the most interesting ones.

For those who don't know, can you put Lightfoot in a cultural context? I think he's a living artifact. He'd take exception to that, but he's one of the few performers who can connect the old Canada with the new Canada. Musicians, especially the who have come up in the last ten years, can listen to him & get a sense of what Canadian music was like in the early '60s & get a sense of what this music was like when it was being born. It's a common ground. You can talk to your grandfather about him. He is one of the building blocks. He is very deeply rooted in terms of Canadians understanding themselves.

But what is distinctly Canadian about his music? When you think about his early music, especially the first Lightfoot album (1966's Lightfoot!), every Canadian musician of the time was aspiring to be the Beatles or Frank Sinatra. They were writing about this faux-big city life that didn't actually exist in Canada. Gord sang about his backyard, nature, growing up in [the Ontario town of] Orillia.

By talking about something that was so local & regional & dear to him he was able to tap into the universal. That wool-sweatered acoustic guitar sound-looking back & not knowing the context it might seem trite now, but it was revolutionary at the time.

What was his relationship with Bob Dylan? He went on before Dylan at his famous Newport concert in 1964 when he went electric. But the most interesting thing was that Dylan's going electric had no influence at all on Gord. After Dylan, every folksinger wanted to go electric. But Gord didn't. I was fascinated by the resolute & stubborn nature of his art. He refused to be bent one way or another. I think staying on that one track made him more respected. He stuck to his guns.

Spaniard Breaks Great Wall Marathon Record

Salvador Calvo, who trains relentlessly over the mountains near his home in northern Spain.

The hardest part was running the flat ground here, running on asphalt, said Calvo, who set a course record Saturday of 3 hours, 23 minutes, 10 seconds. The wall was easy for me because it's the kind of training I do at home.

Calvo's time was amazing, coming in one of the world's most hard & unusual marathons. Factoring in the 3,800 steps of the Great Wall that runners hike, climb & crawl up Salvo's time is probably equivalent to 2:20 on flat land. Maybe faster. Some contrast the intricacy of the race to running at height. I'd rate it as maybe my best performance, said the 44-year-old Spaniard, whose best city marathon time was 2:32 but that was 15 years ago. A computer programmer from Leon, Spain, Calvo signed up for the 26.2-mile race just three days before the deadline by accident while surfing the Internet.

I was looking for something different, & this looked different. I didn't come looking for a record, but I thought the course might suit me, Calvo said.

Calvo was two minutes faster than the old mark, & 15 minutes ahead of Frederick Zalokar of the United States, who finished second in 3:38:14. The first woman was Sara Winter of New Zealand an amazing fifth overall in another course record of 3:50:21.
The old record was 4:12:42. Two-time world marathon champion Abel Anton had a grueling experience as he crossed the line in Ying-Yang Square, overlooked by a traditional curved-roof tower painted red, blue & gold & adorned with dragon & sea horse sculptures. Anton finished 18th overall in 4:26:07. I don't think I will be back again, I think once is enough, Anton said, doubling over briefly to catch his breath at the finish. It's very hard, maybe the hardest I have done.

Anton, who retired five years ago, experienced just what most normal runners do on the Great Wall he was forced to stop, fearing he might faint. About 1,200 runners ran Saturday 450 in the marathon & the rest in the half marathon & 5- & 10-kilometer courses.

Runners completing the marathon have to negotiate the Great Wall twice a total of 4 miles & Anton was felled just after 21 miles, where runners encounter the Great Wall for the second time.
I was dizzy & had to stop about 15 minutes, he said. I think I was a bit dehydrated, it was tougher than I expected.
The 3,800 jagged steps are battering. Some are flat & slick, many are giant-size, & others are little more than pulverized rock made dangerous by a lack of walls on parts of the course.
Add to this 91-degree heat Saturday that baked this portion of China's most famous symbol, a stretch called the Huang Ya Guan pass, about 80 miles from Beijing.

Henrik Brandt of Denmark completed his eighth Great Wall Marathon, the only runner to complete every one since the first event in 1999. The 2003 race was canceled because of the SARS outbreak. Brandt finished in 7:30, just 30 minutes under the limit of eight hours to run the course.

The shirts worn by many runners needed no explaining: Tried it all? Run the Wall!!
For me, it's the hardest one (marathon) I have done, said Winter, the 29-year-old female winner, who ran a personal-best of 2:46 just four weeks ago in Padova, Italy.

Somewhere does airliner transporter level with strange sports venues?

North Carolina and Michigan State on the flight deck of the USS Carl Vinson is undoubtedly the strangest venue for any college basketball sport, but it is not the most uncommon location ever for a sporting event.

TENNIS ON A HELIPAD AT 700 FEET IN THE AIR: The most memorable points Andre Agassi and Roger Federer ever played against one another didn't come at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open or any other Grand Slam. None of that compared to the sight of the two tennis superstars trading ground strokes 700 feet above Dubai's Jumeirah beach in a February 2005 exhibition on the helipad on the roof of the seven-star Burj Al Arab hotel.

THE GREAT WALL MARATHON 26.2 MILES: Hitting the wall isn't just a figure of speech at this grueling annual marathon. A quarter of the scenic 26.2-mile route takes place on China's famed Great Wall itself, and every sprinter must climb about 3,800 stone steps to arrive at the terminate line. The line record belongs to Spaniard Salvador Calvo, who won the 2007 race in 3 hours, 23 minutes, 10 seconds.

THE CARRIER CLASSIC: Michigan State and North Carolina will pay tribute to the military by playing a basketball game on an aircraft carrier on Veteran's Day in San Diego. The two teams will don camouflage jerseys with U.S.A. on the back of them, and President Obama and thousands of military personnel will be in the viewers. If it's sunny out, the game will take place on the flight deck. If not, it will move a level below into the air plane hangar.

GOLF ON GLACIERS: Golf is hard enough in picturesque 70-degree weather, so imagine how much more difficult it is when you introduce arctic conditions. That's the challenge each March in Greenland at the World Ice Golf Championships, which is played with a fluorescent orange ball and with glaciers and icebergs replacing sand traps and water as hazards.

THE BOYS OF WINTER: The popularity of hockey in outdoor football stadiums has steadily increased since Spartan Stadium hosted Michigan and Michigan State in 2001, but the signature event has become the NHL's Winter Classic held annually on New Year's Day. And no Winter Classic has piqued the interest of fans quite as much as the sight of the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins squaring off on the field and famed Fenway Park in 2010. Bruins fans went home satisfied: Their team won 2-1 in overtime.

TWO TEAMS, ONE END ZONE: A football game between Northwestern and Illinois at Wrigley Field seemed like a natural fit in 2010, but organizers failed to take into account the lack of space between the back of one end zone and the ivy-covered outfield wall. As a result, only the other end zone could be used for offense due to safety concerns, an embarrassing gaffe for the Big Ten but one that also made the game memorable.

THE WNBA TAKES CENTER STAGE: Kicked out of Madison Square Garden as a result of the 2004 Republican National Convention, the New York Liberty seized the opportunity to find a new venue that would bring some rare mainstream attention to the WNBA. They hosted the Detroit Shock at historic Radio City Music Hall, a venue that was especially unusual because seating there allowed fans to watch the game from only one side of the court.

KING OF GRASS VS. KING OF CLAY: The above image is not a trick. Tennis stars Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal really did play a 2007 exhibition match in Mallorca, Spain, on a customized half-clay, half-grass court designed to determine which of the two players was the best all-surface player. Nadal won a tightly contested three-set match much to the delight of the Spanish fans in the crowd.

SQUASH AT GRAND CENTRAL: How do you make one of the Professional Squash Association's most significant events more attractive to spectators? Bring it to the masses. The J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions is annually held at New York City's Grand Central Terminal in a specially constructed four-walled glass court inside Vanderbilt Hall.

DUEL IN THE DESERT: The Carrier Classic isn't the only outdoor basketball game in recent years. The Suns and Nuggets played the first outdoor game in modern NBA history in 2008 at Indian Wells Tennis Center in California, a 77-72 Denver victory marred by poor shooting, gusty winds and frigid desert temperatures.

NHL YEARLY WINTER CLASSIC: In 2001, the Michigan State hockey team put a unique twist on their game alongside in-state rival Michigan by hosting the game inside their open-air football stadium. Noting the popularity the game generated, the National Hockey League borrowed the idea and now holds the yearly Winter Classic every New Year’s Day. Last year’s game took place inside Boston’s Fenway Park (home of the Red Sox) and featured the Boston Bruins beating the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in overtime.

We would definitely go for that geekalicious Star Trek bib and spoon duo, and some staffers miss having a discrete number pad when they're using a laptop, so the Canon X Mark I has some appeal. And none of us can resist iTree... it's big, it's heavy, it's wood.

Boldly go where no liquified carrot has gone before! Helping your new life form transition to solid food can feel like the final frontier...not to mention a very messy one that you and your wee geekling can traverse together with a little help from Star Trek Enterprise Light-Up Feeding System.

Dinnertime distraction be darned. If you've passed along your love of Star Trek like a good Trekkie, your baby won't be able to resist the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 replica spoon. Gently dock it in your babe's adorable face station and you'll successfully one-up the tired "open sesame" feeding trick.

The set's durable bib stands up to baby drool and flying food debris, but how are its flashy embedded LED flashing lights activated? By engaging the lightweight, dishwasher-safe spoon Enterprise spaceship, of course. Resistance is futile. Your oatmeal will be assimilated.

ONEDOF Turntable
Price: $150,000

The ONEDOF, short for One Degree of Freedom, is more than a few degrees overpriced, but worth every penny. (That isn't a typo. It really costs $150,000!) If you're serious about your vinyl collection, and seriously loaded, this luxury precision turntable just might be music to your audiophile ears.

Gilded, gorgeous, and dreamed up by one very talented NASA aerospace engineer, the slick ONEDOF record spinner is certainly dreamy to look at. And it's even dreamier to listen to. It better be, right?

It's the first turntable in the history of the phonograph to feature a self-centering aluminum alloy platter with non-resonant liquid suspension. Translation: It wipes out virtually all acoustic distortion and makes vinyl records sound amazingly crisp and clear. Everything about this 50-pound musical heavyweight sounds (and looks) incredible to us, including the outrageous price tag.

iTree iPhone dock by KMKG Studio
Price: $15,000

Ever had the urge to stash your iPhone in a tree? Well, what are you waiting for? For a cool 15 grand, KMKG Studio will cut down and carve you your very own iPhone-charging iTree.

No, it's not pulp fiction; iTree is the real thing, turning any tree of your choice (cherry, poplar, or spruce, for example) into a one-of-a-kind audio art installation. In fact, if you want, you can even trek into the forest with KMKG's carpenters to hand-pick just the right one.

Once hollowed out and sanded, your fresh-cut iTree is trimmed with phone charging hardware and top-of-the-line speakers, hold the leaves. The final product is an acoustically awesome stump of functional art which you might even be tempted to hug.

iTree isn't the greenest or most practical charging choice, nor is it affordable. Still, its cool factor is undeniable. Got an iPad? There's an iTree for that, too.

Bollywood Megastar Shah Rukh Khan votes for Sundarbans

Shah Rukh Khan & other stars from the Indian & Bangladeshi show business world will perform at the Army Stadium in Dhaka on Friday, December 10, as part of a campaign to help the Sundarbans become one of the Official New7Wonders of Nature. Khan will vote live on stage & he hopes that this will motivate people to follow his example & support the Sundarbans campaign.

The Sundarbans is the largest tidal mangrove forest in the world. The name Sundarban means "beautiful forest" in the Bengali language.

Shah Rukh Khan is a Bollywood actor, film producer & television host. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri Award in 2005 for his contribution to Indian Cinema.

The wonderful world wide Sundarbans mangrove

Some images of world's largest  Mangrove of Sundarbans

Is there anything that the humble mangrove cannot do? Along with being an important source of food & fuel, mangrove forests provide wood for building houses & ships because of its firmness & resistance to rot. Mangrove forests also make a significant contribution to the preservation of the environment by preventing coastline erosion caused by waves & currents.

But there's more. Mangrove forests absorb carbon dioxide & keep it locked away in the soil, & they offer a natural habitat for crabs, shrimps & waterbirds.

From Africa to Asia to Oceania to the Americas to the Middle East, you'll find mangroves. & two of the 28 Official Finalists in the New7Wonders of Nature place considerable emphasis on their mangrove forests: The Sundarbans & Bu Tinah Island.

The Mangrove Action Project a non-governmental organization run by a global network with the goal of saving mangroves works to raise awareness of the trees & their benefits. Part of its mission is to point out that the mangrove is increasingly threatened by coastal development.

Mindful of the role of the mangrove, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) is promoting the tree as a buffer against extreme weather events & as a nursery to the emirate's fish stocks. Its most recent mangrove project took place in February this year, when it planted 800,000 trees. Thabit Al Abdessalaam, Director of Biodiversity Management Sector at EAD, said: "The mangrove plays an integral role in the marine ecosystem, providing a habitat for aquatic & terrestrial fauna & flora, as well as offsetting carbon emissions which help reduce the effects of climate change. It is essential that each one of us assume responsibility for the conservation of this species, as it is a treasured part of our natural heritage."

New7Wonders launches SMS voting in Bangladesh: government targets 1 billion votes for Sundarbans

Bangladesh is one of the world leaders in providing mobile telephone access for it's large population, & many of the country's mobile companies are pioneers in this field. In an advanced partnership with New7Wonders, the leading mobile provider, Teletalk Bangladesh Limited, in corporation with the nation's other mobile companies, has set up a generally available SMS voting system for the New7Wonders of Nature. Voters from Bangladesh can now contribute by sending a SMS from any mobile phone anywhere in the country. Voting for Sundarbans just needs the two letters "SB" sent to 16333, & each SMS vote counts as one vote for the Sundarbans. Voting is also possible for the remaining 27 Finalists, & each SMS vote costs BDT2.

Announcing the launch of the New7Wonders of Nature SMS voting in Bangladesh, Environment Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud said, "There are at least 50 million active mobile SIM cards in the country, & if 20 SMS were sent through each SIM card, the Sundarbans would get one billion SMS votes to its credit".

Welcoming the launch, New7Wonders Director Jean-Paul de la Fuente says, "Bangladesh is a strong contributor in the New7Wonders of Nature campaign, & as I have viewed first-hand, Bangladeshis are excited texters so I am sure they will show their SMS support for Sundarbans in the coming weeks & months." He continues, "This partnership is unique as it brings together challenging mobile companies, with the inspiration & support of the government & the regulator, all working in unison for the national awareness & to ensure maximum access to the New7Wonders of Nature campaign for the extremely mobile-enabled Bangladesh population."

The Sundarbans delta, at the mouth of the Ganges river, is the largest mangrove forest in the world, spreading across parts of Bangladesh and West Bengal, India. The Sundarbans features a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests. The area is known for its wide range of fauna, with the Royal Bengal tiger being the most famous, but also including many birds, spotted deer, crocodiles and snakes.
