We love these musicians Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Jay Reatard, Amy Winehouse-for their talent, for their apparent willingness to get so close to the heart of rock'n'roll, for the way the turbulence of their lives allows us, like stupid vampires, to consider their art is new real, authentic, deeper. Then they die, & we say we saw it coming.

Sure, Amy Winehouse's rap sheet certainly made it seem as if the singer was either powerless or impassive in ceasing the behaviors that, too often, effect in calamity. Keep in mind too that she was singing about rejecting rehab before she was became a celebrity, so if we're going to go down the twisted road of assuming she was singing about her life, then we can also assume that she hadn't been easy to assist. (If, indeed, people tried.) Now, though, there will be people who take Winehouse's loss as proof of something powerful about her art. I want those people to realize this: an early death proves of nothing. For every Jim Morrison there's a Leonard Cohen; for every Janis a Joni, a genius who sidestepped. Amy Winehouse was great in spite of drugs, not because of them. Can drugs be a useful tool for some artists? Perhaps, though we have no idea we how much more productive artists who looked to drugs for motivation might've been had they kept cleaner.

Drugs & music go mutually. It is a shady business, full of shady people. It can be hard to say no, & it does not get any easier. For a while maybe drugs can assist a musician work better. When, as in the astonishingly gifted Winehouse's case, they get famous & we learn about their drug use, we find it compelling. It shows that they're "tortured"; that they're "artists"; that they're "rock'n'roll." (Not one of those things equates to being human, by the way.) Then, in the worst-case scenario, the musician dies. & we get sad, put the dead in a line with the others who died similarly, and, over time, move on to the next seductive disaster-in-waiting. I hate this pattern. I hate it so much.

Maybe drugs can allow some musicians to get closer to the music's glow. But it can also snuff them out, & there is no new after the fact lesson to be learned from that. There is only unhappiness & the hope that, over time, we accept that it is far, far better to fade away than burn out. It always was. It always will be…

Financial Problems May Possibly Shut-Down

WikiLeaks said it will shut-down by year end if financial services companies don't lift restrictions on donations that have hobbled the organization.

The website which publishes leaked, sensitive documents said it is temporarily suspending all publishing operations so that it can devote its resources to battling Visa Inc., MasterCard Inc., eBay Inc.'s PayPal, Bank of America Corp. & other companies that have prohibited payments to the site since last December.

The last major WikiLeaks release, hundreds of thousands of U.S. government documents about Guantanamo Bay detainees, was in April.

"This financial blockade is an existential threat to WikiLeaks," Julian Assange, the head of WikiLeaks, said in London on Monday. "If the blockade is not torn down by the end of the year, the organization cannot continue its work." He said the payment companies had bowed to political pressure from Washington & have prevented WikiLeaks financial contributors from supporting the cause of their choice.

Days after WikiLeaks began releasing a slew of confidential U.S. State Department cables last November, companies including PayPal, MasterCard & Visa prohibited users from making donations to the site. Those limits have stayed in place ever since, putting a damper on WikiLeaks' fund raising efforts.

Third Series of Paranormal Activity Hits UK Box Office

It is debuting that at number one with takings of £55m. This horror story is based on Unexplained supernatural theme like "Forth Kind", which purports to present discovered footage of things going bump in the night, is also at the top of the US film charts.

By pre-empting the Hallowe'en weekend, it sneaks ahead of on several other horror releases. Due out this week are Demons Never Die, The Silence & a re-release of 1984 comedy classic Ghostbusters. But they face strong competition from Stephen Spielberg's blockbuster retelling of Tintin, US civil rights drama The Help early release.

Paranormal Activity 3 is strong debut knocked spy spoof Johnny English: Reborn down to second place in this week's chart.

It made £2 million over the weekend, putting it comfortably above the star-studded disaster movie Contagion, which was a new entry at number three. But on a screen-by-screen basis, little separated the two films.

Rowan Atkinson's secret agent took an average of £3,718 on each of the 552 screens it was showing on, while Contagion's receipts were £3,711 on 398 screens.

The only other new entry in this week's chart was literary adaptation We Need To Talk About Kevin, which took £492,297 to land in seventh place.

Meanwhile, The Smurfs is the longest-running hit on the chart, hanging on to 14th place in its 16th week of release, with total box office takings of £16.7 million.

Oracle Corporation to buy RightNow for about $1.5 billion

Oracle Corporation plans to buy online customer service company RightNow Technologies Inc for about $1.5 billion, sparking speculation of bids for other so-called cloud technology companies that deliver software, data & computing power over the Internet.

Oracle's bid amounted to a 20 percent premium over RightNow's closing price on Friday. RightNow's shares rose 19 percent in early trading.

Oracle is pushing into the cloud technology market, including sales force automation, human resources & databases.

Oracle said on Monday it would pay $43 for each share of RightNow. The company's shares, which closed at $35.96 on Friday, rose to $42.81 on Nasdaq.

RightNow reported third-quarter profit ahead of Wall Street estimates and canceled its meeting call scheduled for later in the day. The company also canceled its October 25 analyst day conference.

Most powerful earthquake on Turkey

Turkey was struck by its most powerful earthquake in at least a decade Sunday, as a major tremor & at least seven aftershocks rattled the poor east of the country.

A seven~story building collapsed on Kazim Karabekir Street in the city of Van, & more buildings were reduced to rubble the village of Tabanli in Van Province, the Anatolian news agency said. It was unknown how many people were trapped.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported the quake had a magnitude of 7.3, then revised it down to 7.2.

The last quake of that magnitude in Turkey a 7.2 tremor in Duzce in 1999 killed 894 people, the USGS reported. A 7.6 earthquake in Izmit, Turkey, killed more than 17,000 people the same year, according to the USGS.

Sunday's major quake hit at 1:41 p.m. local time & was followed by at least seven aftershocks, American & Turkish monitoring agencies reported.

Sales of tablet computers running Google’s Android software rose more than ten-crease in the last year, as new records suggest that Apple’s iPad may at last be facing serious competition.

Products made by Motorola, Samsung, Acer & others have been greeted with some critical acclaim but have failed to make a serious dent on the dominance of Apple’s iPad. According to analysis by plan Analytics, however, Samsung’s latest generation of Galaxy tablets has led a rise in Android tablet sales & pushed the iPad’s market share last quarter to 67 per cent, down from 96 per cent.

Android-powered tablet computers accounted for 27 percent of global sales during the last quarter, jumping from 2.3 percent a year earlier, plan Analytics said.

Thailand Floods Could Last-VI-More-Weeks

Thailand's catastrophic floods may take up to six-weeks to recede, the prime minister said Saturday, as residents living in Bangkok's outskirts sloshed through waist high waters in some areas & the human toll from the crisis nationwide rose to 356 dead & more than 110,000 displaced.

Water bearing down on the capital from the north began spilling through Bangkok's outer districts on Friday & continued creeping in on Saturday. So far, however, most of the metropolis of 9 million people has escaped unharmed, & its two airports are operating normally.

Bangkokians are girding for the worst, though, after Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra this week urged all residents to move valuables to higher ground. A mild panic prompted a run on grocery stores, with many running out of bottled water. A Thai company that distributes drinking water across the city sent out an SMS to customers announcing deliveries had been halted because of the crisis.

When the Apple iPhone 4S & Amazon Kindle Fire tablet debuted this fall, the tech press blogged breathlessly about how these new devices harness 'the cloud.' Menacing as this hazy tech term may sound, the cloud is actually a regular part of daily digital life. In fact, gadget analysts expect this metaphorical cloud to envelop more of the world in coming years.

Cloud computing describes when a personal computer relies on distant servers themselves powerful computers & known collectively as the cloud for certain tasks & services, often in one of two ways.

The first: data storage. When you post a photo to Facebook, the company's servers hold on to that image. This lets you share the picture with friends, view it from any of your electronic devices, & even delete the photo from your PC without fear of losing it forever. The image lives in the cloud now.

The second common use is more forward looking. Those yonder servers can help your computer or phone do things that it is not powerful enough to tackle on its own. For example, iPhones & Android smart phones offer a free app called Google Translate. Euro zone debt crisis on Wednesday, after EU finance ministers made progress in talks on recapitalizing banks.

Euro zone countries are working on a plan that involves leveraging the euro zone bailout fund, recapitalizing European banks & putting together a second financing package for Greece that entails deeper losses for private investors.

Euro zone leaders hope the measures will ease market anxiety over euro zone sovereign debt & put an end to the two years old crisis that now threatens the global economy.

Euro zone leaders meet on Sunday to discuss the package but real decisions will only come at the next summit on Wednesday.

Google's New Smart Phone Can recognize Your Face!

Google's new innovation, The Galaxy Nexus phone includes face recognize unlocking, improved voice recognition, & touch sharing. In Hong Kong today, Google & Samsung introduced a new smart phone & operating system that could represent a potential rival for Apple's new iPhone 4S.

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus, which will go on sale next month, will be the most advanced smart phone from the Korean giant. It will also be the first phone to run Google's latest operating system, Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich, following alphabetically from the earlier Gingerbread & Honeycomb.

The hardware includes a 1.2 gigahertz dual core processor, a 4.65 inch HD Super AMOLED display at 1280 by 720 resolution, a five megapixel camera, HD 1080 pixel video, with one gigabyte of RAM & 16 gigabytes or 32 gigabytes internal memory. Depending on the region, it will support LTE or HSPA+, two 4G mobile communications standards. It has Bluetooth 3.0, USB 2.0, Wi Fi, as well as near field communication for payments & data sharing.

As for Android 4.0, rather a lot has been done to enhance the operating system. Google's Android director of user skill, Matias Duarte, showed off some of the new features. He began with the design of the new typeface, called Roboto. This is a sans serif font that was specially designed for small screens & to make it easier for the user to read text.

His partner tried to unlock the phone but failed, which is what was expected. When Duarte then put his face up to the camera, it still did not recognize him. He put that down to the bright makeup he needed for the event.

In defining what Android is about, Andy Rubin, Google's senior vice president of mobile, said: We want to do better than what people are referring to as smart phones today. So we take all the innovation that's available at Google everything we offer in cloud services and make it available on your cell phone 24 hours a day.

Analyst firm Gartner recently said that Android was number one in the second quarter of 2011, with 46,775,900 units sold (43.6 percent of the market). Symbian was second with 23,853,200 units sold (22.1 percent) & IOS was third with 19,628,800 units sold (18.2 percent).

Early Breast Cancer showing May Help A Little

Preliminary breast cancer showing as early as age 25 may help women who carry a genetic change linked to a higher risk of cancer live longer, suggests a new study.

[Results indicate that breast cancer deaths will decrease because of showing] study co-author Dr. Janie Lee, who specialize in breast at Massachusetts General Hospital, said by email.

Researchers looked at which breast cancer screenings mammogram or attractive meaning imaging were effective in women who carry gene mutations BRCA1 & BRCA2, known to increase the risk of breast & ovarian cancer. They looked at women aged 25, 30, 35 & 40 years.

Reported in the journal Cancer, found that compared to no showing at all, annual showing starting at age 25 extended life by 1.3 to 1.8 years. Showing with a breast every six months extended life by 1.5 to 1.7 years.

The tests were not perfect. Over the course of their lives, women with BRCA1 who began having mammograms at the age of 25 would have two false positives a finding that doesn’t turn out to be cancer. Those women with BRCA1 who had an annual mammogram & breast MRI would have four false positives.

For BRCA2 carriers, the matching numbers of false positives were three & eight.
The authors based their findings on a computer model that may not translate into real life, noted Dr. Carol Fabian, who specialize in breast cancer research at the University of Kansas & was not part of the study.

Fabian told Reuters Health: This is a model so they are applying things that have been learned in other studies.

In women 40 years or younger with breast cancer, about 1 in 10 are likely to have a BRCA alteration, according to the National Cancer Institute.

Huge comet crash closely avoided in 1883

A huge comet closely missed hitting the Earth when it passed within 5,000 miles of us in 1883.

Astronomers have been examining a photograph of the comet taken in 1883 by Mexican astronomer Jose Banilla. At the time it was hailed as the first photograph of a UFO. The object would have been 8 times the mass of Haley's comet & would have wrought untold devastation if it had hit us, may be destroy mankind!

But now scientists from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico believe it could have been a massive comet that came close to hitting the Earth with a similar mass to the object that killed the dinosaurs.

Mexican scientists believe this photograph taken in 1883 shows a comet that came shut to hitting the earth.

Using the time that it took the object to cross the sun combined with the location of Bonilla's observatory, the report calculated that the object would be at most 8,000km away, & possibly much less.
'The only bodies in the Solar System which are enclosed by a bright murkiness are the comets, so it is accurate to suppose that the objects seen by Bonilla were small comets, believed the scientists.

As well as being shockingly close to earth, the scientists think that the comet could have had the same group as the object that wiped out the dinosaurs eight times the mass of Halley's comet.
The report's claims have been questioned, though as a comet breaking up so shut to earth should have resulted in a meteor shower, & no astronomers detected one.

The crime report of America 2010 released by FBI in september 19

From Washington, D.C. According to the figures by the FBI, the estimated number of violent crimes in 2010 declined for the fourth consecutive year. Property crimes also decreased, marking the eighth straight year that the collective estimates for these offenses declined.

The 2010 statistics show that the estimated volumes of violent & property crimes declined 6.0 percent & 2.7 percent, respectively, when compared with the 2009 estimates. The violent crime rate for the year was 403.6 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants (a 6.5 percent decrease from the 2009 rate), & the property crime rate was 2,941.9 offenses per 100,000 persons (a 3.3 percent decrease from the 2009 figure). These & additional data are presented in the 2010 edition of the FBI’s annual report Crime in the United States. This publication is a statistical compilation of offense & arrest data reported by law enforcement agencies voluntarily participating in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program. The UCR Program collects information on crimes reported by law enforcement agencies regarding the violent crimes of murder & nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault as well as the property crimes of burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, & arson. (Although the FBI classifies arson as a property crime, it does not estimate arson data because of variations in the level of participation by the reporting agencies. Consequently, arson is not included in the property crime estimate.) The program also collects arrest data for the offenses listed above plus 20 additional offenses that include all other crimes except traffic violations. In 2010, there were 18,108 city, county, university & college, state, tribal, & federal agencies that participated in the UCR Program. A summary of the statistics reported by these agencies, which are included in Crime in the United States, 2010, follows:

• Nationwide in 2010, there were an estimated 1,246,248 violent crimes.
• Each of the four violent crime offenses decreased when compared with the 2009 estimates. Robbery had the largest decrease at 10.0 percent, followed by forcible rape with a 5.0 percent decline, murder & nonnegligent manslaughter with a 4.2 percent decrease, & aggravated assault with a 4.1 percent decline.
• Nationwide in 2010, there were an estimated 9,082,887 property crimes.
• Each of the property crime offenses also decreased in 2010 when compared with the 2009 estimates. The largest decline, 7.4 percent, was for motor vehicle thefts. The estimated number of burglaries decreased 2.0 percent, & the estimated number of larceny-thefts declined 2.4 percent.
• Collectively, victims of property crimes (excluding arson) lost an estimated $15.7 billion in 2010.
• The FBI estimated that in 2010, agencies nationwide made about 13.1 million arrests, excluding traffic violations.
• The 2010 arrest rate for violent crimes was 179.2 per 100,000 inhabitants; for property crime, the rate was 538.5 per 100,000 inhabitants.
• By violent crime offense, the arrest rate for murder & nonnegligent manslaughter was 3.6; forcible rape, 6.5; robbery, 36.6; & aggravated assault was 132.6 arrests per 100,000 inhabitants.
• By property crime offense, the arrest rate for burglary was 94.3; larceny-theft, 417.5; and motor vehicle theft, 23.1 per 100,000 inhabitants. The arrest rate for arson was 3.7 per 100,000 inhabitants.
• In 2010, there were 14,744 law enforcement agencies that reported their staffing levels to the FBI. These agencies reported that, as of October 31, 2010, they collectively employed 705,009 sworn officers & 308,599 civilians, a rate of 3.5 employees for each 1,000 inhabitants.
